The 2024/25 online modules and the field component must be completed by FEBRUARY 28, 2025
(no extensions possible).

Before you register in 2024/2025, please note the following information: Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) anticipate hosting and administering a new and revised CABIN training program in the spring of 2025. 

ECCC anticipates training costs will change and are expected to be substantially lower in 2025. CRI and ECCC want to ensure a smooth transition in 2024. During this time, CRI will continue to host and administer CABIN training, but full certification must be completed by March 2025. Incomplete modules or missed field sessions cannot be carried forward in 2025. For more information about upcoming changes, please refer to the CABIN website.

We want to be very clear on the changes and let people know so they can make up their mind on WHEN and HOW they want to do their CABIN training.

Again, ECCC will launch a new CABIN training delivery model in Spring 2025.

Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN)

CABIN is an aquatic biological monitoring program led and funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada for assessing the health of freshwater ecosystems across the country. Environment and Climate Change Canada has partnered with CRI to design and deliver the CABIN online and field training certification program. 

CABIN Certification Program

There are two CABIN training programs offered:

1) Online component consists of up to 6 theoretical modules about the program and use of the online tools. Depending on the interest and responsibilities of users, each module was designed for a specific purpose and different modules are required for different levels of CABIN access. Refer to the ECCC CABIN website for more information. Each online learning module contains assessment activities, such as quizzes and assignments, to evaluate learning.

2) Practical 2-day field component provides certification in CABIN sampling methods. Field certifications are held in several locations across Canada during the summer months. In addition to obtaining field certification, the workshops provide the opportunity to ask questions and participate in group discussions related to the information learned online. Access to enter data to the CABIN database is dependent on obtaining CABIN Field Certification. Participants must complete Modules 1 & 2 of the online course before they can participate in the field component.

The 2-day field practical training session fee is included in the course registration for Project Manager and Field Technician level training (see below). Note: If you are registering for Field Technician or Project Manager, ensure you are able to attend a field course in 2023. Payment for the field component cannot be carried forward.

CABIN field training sign-up is on a first-come first-served basis. There are limited spaces available. Please review the list of course offerings and space availability below before proceeding with Project Manager or Field Technician Registration. The list below is updated regularly with new field session offerings, capacity, and waiting list availability.

Modules 1 and 2 must be completed before field training. The link for the field session sign-up is only available at the beginning of Module 2.

Online Component prerequisites and requirements

There are no prerequisites to take the online CABIN training modules; however, a background in biology, stream ecology, environmental science, or a related field would be helpful. Project Manager and Field Technician training requires the completion of the field component. Modules 1 and 2 must be completed before field training.

Field component participant responsibilitIes

It is the participant’s responsibility to supply their own personal protective equipment, such as waders, rain gear, sunscreen, hat and bug repellent. Each participant should consult with the organization for which they are attending this course to ensure that they adhere by their respective organization’s health and safety policies. Participants who have paid their training fee are covered by UNB’s liability coverage for the purpose of attending the two day field course. The participant is required to ensure their own transportation during the field course.

Note: The techniques used in the CABIN protocol involve a certain level of physicality. The most physically demanding aspect of the training requires vigorous and consistent ‘kicking’ of the substrate for a three-minute period (breaks can be taken). Walking in chest waders and in river and stream environments can also be challenging. Participants are expected to demonstrate all aspects of the protocol during the field certification. RÉSEAU CANADIEN DE BIOSURVEILLANCE AQUATIQUE (RCBA)

RCBA EST UN PROGRAMME DE SURVEILLANCE BIOLOGIQUE AQUATIQUE DIRIGÉ ET FINANCÉ PAR ENVIRONNEMENT ET CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE CANADA POUR ÉVALUER LA SANTÉ DES ÉCOSYSTÈMES D'EAU DOUCE À TRAVERS LE PAYS. ENVIRONNEMENT ET CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE CANADA S'EST ASSOCIÉ AU CRI POUR CONCEVOIR ET DISPENSER LE PROGRAMME DE CERTIFICATION EN LIGNE ET SUR LE TERRAIN DU RÉSEAU DE BIOSURVEILLANCE AQUATIQUE CANADIEN.

La formation et la certification RCBA comportent deux volets:

1) La composante en ligne comprend jusqu'à 6 modules théoriques sur le programme et l'utilisation des outils en ligne. Selon l’intérêt et les responsabilités des usagers, chaque module a été conçu selon un dessein spécifique et différents modules sont nécessaires aux différents niveaux d’accès au RCBA. Chacun des modules de formation en ligne contient des activités d’évaluation, telles que des jeux- questionnaires et des devoirs, afin d’évaluer l’apprentissage.

2) Un volet pratique de 2 jours sur le terrain permet de certifier les méthodes d'échantillonnage RCBA. Les certifications de terrain sont menées dans plusieurs endroits à travers le Canada au cours des mois estivaux. En plus d’obtenir la certification de terrain, les ateliers fournissent l’opportunité de poser des questions et de participer aux discussions collectives liées à l’information apprise en ligne. Les participants doivent compléter les modules 1 et 2 du cours en ligne avant d’être éligibles à l’inscription au cours de certification de terrain. La composante terrain de 2 jours est incluse dans les frais d'inscription aux formations de niveau Chef de projet et Technicien de terrain (voir ci-dessous). Remarque: si vous vous inscrivez à une formation de technicien de terrain ou de gestionnaire de projet, assurez-vous de pouvoir participer à une formation sur le terrain en 2023. Le paiement de la composante terrain ne peut pas être reporté.

CALENDRIER DES COURS

Les inscriptions à la formation sur le terrain offerte par le Réseau canadien de biosurveillance aquatique (RCBA) seront traitées par ordre de réception (premier arrivé, premier servi). Le nombre de participants est limité. Veuillez consulter la liste des cours proposés et des places disponibles ci-dessous avant de procéder à l’inscription comme gestionnaire de projet ou technicien de terrain. La liste ci-dessous est régulièrement mise à jour en fonction de la disponibilité de nouvelles formations sur le terrain, du nombre de places offertes et des listes d’attente.

Les modules 1 et 2 doivent avoir été terminés avant la formation sur le terrain. Le lien permettant de s’inscrire à la session sur le terrain est seulement disponible au début du module 2

CONDITIONS PRÉREQUIS ET EXIGENCES DU VOLET EN LIGNE

Les modules de formation en ligne du RCBA ne nécessitent aucun prérequis; cependant, une base de connaissances en biologie, écologie des cours d’eau, sciences environnementales, ou dans un domaine connexe serait utile. La formation des chefs de projet et des techniciens de terrain nécessite la réalisation de la composante terrain. Les modules 1 et 2 doivent être complétés avant la formation sur le terrain.

RESPONSABILITÉS DES PARTICIPANTS AU VOLET TERRAIN

Il incombe au participant de fournir son propre équipement de protection personnel, tel que des cuissardes, des vêtements de pluie, de l’écran solaire, un chapeau et de l’insectifuge. Le participant doit s’assurer qu’il respecte les politiques de santé et de sécurité de sa propre organisation. Les participants qui ont dûment payé leur cours sont couverts par la couverture en responsabilité civile de l’UNB pendant les deux jours de cours sur le terrain. À noter que le participant doit assurer son propre transport sur le terrain tout au long de la formation.

Remarque: Les techniques utilisées dans le protocole RCBA impliquent un certain niveau d’effort physique. L'aspect physique le plus exigeant durant la formation consiste en un « coup de pied » vigoureux et soutenu sur le substrat durant une période de trois minutes (des pauses peuvent être prises) . Marcher avec des cuissardes dans un cours d’eau (rivière ou ruisseau) peut également être difficile. Le participant doit montrer qu’il maitrise tous les aspects du protocole lors de la certification sur le terrain.
